the hot wire leading to starter melted?

the hot wire leading to the starter melted. no other wire appears to have been affected. the engine was off, but the key switch was on. any ideas ideas what may have caused this?

check the starter for amperage draw. starter cable for loose or coroided connections, also check battery ground cable for the same thing.
