How can i fix my playstation 2 console?

Sometimes when i turn my game on it will start. It will start going all the way through the game. Then when i get all the way to the point when i am about to start playing it will freeze.After it freezes I take the game out and clean it. While I clean it i turn the game off. when i am ready to turn the game on i push the on button but it takes a long time for the game screen to come back on. then when it finally comes on the disc read error comes on or it will say enter a playstation 2 disc. It does this foe any game I put in the playstation 2. Can you tell me how to fix it thank you.

ya if the q tip thing that he said dosen't work u may need to take apart that lense thing and clean the larger lense below the lense u c, those can get very dirty

get a q-tip with rubbing alchol on it then open up ur ps2 (u have to pry off the rubber pads with a screw driver then unscrew the screws there shud be 8 or 9 in all there r some on the lower part too. then on the inside you will see a black box, open that and then you will see a lense, use the q tip to put rubbing alchol on it then dry it with the other end of the q-tip then assemble it back together (be very care full not to harm that ribbon looking thing if it tears you cant open or reset your ps2) (if you still have your waranty you will lose it for opening this)

Sounds like it could be a dirty or worn laser.
Try a dvd cleaning disk or access the laser assembly and clean the laser eye with a damp cotton bud (water).
Reassemble and test.
Unfortunately due to the cost of new units it may mot be worth replacing the laser unless you find a cheap one.
