heating wont ignite?

My hot water works fine when I turn it on. When i turn my heating on the boiler will not fire up, but when I put the heating on with the hot water the heating will work for the same length of time it takes to heat the water (but not on all the radiators). I can hear the thermostat once I press the on button though.
