brighter lights on volvo 440?

hi, ive just replaced the standard 55/60w h4 headlight bulbs, with 80/100w, which i bought from halfords.they are no brighter than the originals.no good, at 70 mph, on an unlit motorway ! do i need a relay, or something ? thanks.

I have just put rings 55w/60w, 60% more light on the road bulbs in my 440, and they make all the difference! I run a car spares shop, and they retail with us at £14.99 a pair, so well worth the money. Ring have also bought out road legal bulbs with up to 90% more light, you may like to try these. I believe they will sort your problem! While on the subject of headlamps, i need a new n/s lamp, as the reflective holder inside has become unlodged, cant be bothered to take it apart and re-glue it,so does anyone know where i can get one in the midlands? Thanks!
Craig!

You might need to replace the headlamp reflectors - they get pitted after years of use and don't reflect as much light. You will have to buy a new headlamp assembly - reflectors are not available separately. Beware that they are expensive though!! I had to pay £80 each for mine a few years ago!

hi ,guys. thanks for the info, firstly, the bulb box states 80w dipped beam, 100w main.[ not for road use. ] but we do it ! other 440 owners have told me, the standard lights are poor. the lenses are clean, & beam height ok [ recent m.o.t] passengers in my car, think im running on side lights . . so, anything else i can try ? thanks.

A relay is just an electrically operated switch and will not make your lights brighter...

At 100W your main beam has two-thirds more power than it used to have - some of this extra power will be lost as heat but common sense says there should be more light - you have 60W and 100W lamps at home and you can easily see the difference. Dipped beam 45% more.

Might it be that your headlights need adjusting?
Maybe the new lamps are actually 55/60 as well...
