Mend Singer 5430c Sewing Machine Tension

Singer5430c tension?

Our Singer 5430c has had tension problems,my wife asked me to look at it and on turning to setting 9 the knob fell off. I have replaced the bits in the correct order but how tight do I tighten the knurled wheel before replacing the knob (with the 0-9 on). the machine is serviced regularly but it is used a lot.

Hello Tom,
Thread the top of the machine up all the way through the needle, put your thumb behind the needle just above the eye and pull the thread through with your other hand, adjust the knurled nut until you can pull the thread through with some resistence, make sure the presser foot is down, when it is just pulling through put the dial back on with the number 3 or 4 at the indicator, test sew and you can adjust it a bit either way if you have to.
