what is the standby dial inside my fridge freezer for?

ihave a zanussi fridge freezer zx99/5si.ice keeps forming on the grill which is stopping the cold air getting to my fridge,inside the fridge is a dial no 1to 5 which is called standby.ive no idea what its for,could this be the source of the problem?

Hiya, how can I get into the evaporator ZX99/55si fridge freezer? Ice has built up in it and keeps knocking out the fridge.
