how can i find out what is making a whining noise on my van?

ford transit connect 1.8tddi 75ps on a 53 reg. done roughly 58000 miles. help please - think it is alternator or water pump???

Yes its the tension pulley between the altenator and bottom pulley these were made of plastic and made an awful whining noise when worn. Ford have a revised metal pulley out now which hopefully should last longer and not make so much noise when it gets worn, these usually retail at £25 from ford dealers
