Mend Briggs & Stratton Lawn Mower Engine Repair

pull cord on a briggs and stratton engine won't retract?

The pull cord on a my briggs and stratton engine won't retract. I took the housing which holds the pull cord off the mower and I don't see anything broken. I can tell if the spring is broken or just come loose.

1.The clip on the return spring broke off
2.The cord retracted off the spool and is jammed in the housing
3.Solid rust has frozen the spring into uselessness
