well you was spot on it was the gas valve. since it has been fixed the hot water worked well with the heating but i put it on timer and now i dont get hot water, i have to use the emmersion to heat the water now, what could be wrong now?

Depends on flue type O/F or B/F
If B/F type requires taking boiler inner case off
Not recommended have to get gas engineer
If gas valve call gas engineer
