Mend Ariston AWD 12S UK Washing Machine Fault Spin Cycle

My Ariston Margarita 2000 type AWD 12S UK has fault?

The programmer selector knob rotates without stopping when a manual selection of eg spin is selected. It rotates one revolution without stopping and with no effect on the wash cycle and then stops at a programme position eg 4.
