How do I get the pull cord to retract on the lawnmower pull start?

How do I get the pull cord to retract on the lawnmower pull start? The mower is a Craftsmen 5.0 Hr push Lawnmower. I reattached the broken cord, but it will not retract.

You will need to remove the recoil - either separately or as part of the cowling, depending on make.

Assuming you have replaced the cord (as opposed to tying the broken bit back on!), you need to tension the spring.
