I bought one dvd unit with a tv tuner from ebay for 160.00
removed the old unit, installed the bought unit and guess what!!!! *B*I*N*G*O* works a dream.

Have had same problems with an 03 V70. Call Braydon Motors & ask for John in Service/Sales. For £100 they send to a friend (he is an amateur & no guarantees can be given) they know who will replace the pickups & lens unit in the DVD unit. Did it last year & still working fine.
With some earlier research I found a manufacturer/supplier in Germany who will sell the whole unit reconditioned, or parts for you to replace yourself. Sadly have lost link, but they are out there!

Having researched everything about getting mine fixed, I reckon it's best to forget it unless you're made of money.

One last resort you could do, try making a copy of the DVD with a computer, they often keep on trying when other readers give up.

I have the same issue, and managed to get it working for a short period by managing to get a cotton bud in to clean the lense... same issue again.

Same problem XC70 2004, dealer quoted £252 in March for new dvd unit (V30730126) now says Volvo want £818 for unit. Looks like you can buy a lot of Garmin for the money

Similar problem with 5 yr old XC70 system. Have tried previous DVD but system will still not read the disk.
Volvo dealer has checked it out and quoted C. £600. to replace DVD player.
Would be interested if anyone has a solution other than TomTom.

It is likely the DVD itself. Unfortunately they are very expensive to replace, c. £285.00. You could try to google for a cheaper one, but be careful of pirate copies - they won't work at all & will set you back c. £70.00. Best bet is to try & sweet talk the dealer into giving you one at a more reasonable price. Good luck.

Just had mine checked by the Volvo dealers for the same problem and was quoted £1450 for a replacement. Needless to say, I declined the offer. Be interested to hear whether there are any repairs possible without this sort of expense. A stick on system will now be used!!
