Mend Ford Escort 1600 Reg Changed Idle

How can I fix my Ford escort 1600 R reg?

It wont tick over when cold, I have changed the idle valve and this made matters worst. I have now had to leave the valve disconnected as it makes the engine race erratic. It runs fine when warm.
