Mend Dyson DC04 Suction Vacuum

Dyson DC04 loss of suction?

Why are we having to clean our filter ever 2-3 weeks rather than ever 6 months as advised? Big loss in suction even when clean. No blocks that we can see.

Check the "U" section that connects to the bottom of the extension hose and round to the base of the Dyson.

Pushing the handle back into the hose can push this down and you loose suction - thats all it was on our Dyson Animal

I found one of my housemates had managed to suck up a lighter followed by a cotton bud which both got jammed in the wand where the handle angle is. The suction was instantly 100% once I had cleared the obstruction with a bit of wire!

Have you checked the drive belt? A broken belt prevents the brush roller from turning and is the usual reason for not picking up dirt in my experience. Check if there is suction when using the tube. If so, pipes are OK. Easy to replace belt yourself.

Dyson animal - First remove and clean the removeable filter, then go through all connectors and hoses. Remove the clear plastic drum leaving you with the pointy bit. Undo the screws at top and remove top bit. Tap it gently on the counter, you will notice lots of fine dust coming out. Clean inside, down the cones. Use a brush to unclog holes around plastic mesh bit. Re-assemble and the suction is back!

As noted above the Dyson does lose suction when the cyclone below the filter gets clogged. This clogging may be the result of using the Dyson for vacuuming fine construction dust as it was for me. The Dyson is not shop vac. I am thinking it is because it does not have a bag filter and is more susceptible to clogging with fine dust. While initially frustrating, this turned out to be an easily solvable problem. In addition to cleaning the filter you have to take apart and clean the cyclone unit. To be conservative, I would not use water to wash it out as it is not designed to be cleaned in that fashion and it is not necessary. Take the cyclone outside, wipe it, shake it and blow it out with an air compressor or one of those aerosol cans. It should only take a few minutes. I now use a shop vac to clean those construction projects around the house.

Replace/wash the filter!!! I just bought one used and was terribly disappointed when the suction wasn't as strong as it is on my sister's brand new one. I replaced the filter (which looked clean) and bam! Good as new.

Dyson animal - First remove and clean the removeable filter, then go through all connectors and hoses. then remove the clear plastic drum leaving you with the red pointy bit. undo 3 screws at top and remove top bit. Then blast it with a jet washer or hose, trying to get inside everywhere especially down the cones. use a brush to unclog holes around plastic mesh bit. Dry it thoroughly ! and re-assemble. Doubled the suction on mine...

It is when the holes in the tube DO get clogged that they lose suction. Contrary to what Dyson says, they can lose suction and do. If they were so good, they would not have had to increase their warranty from 2, to 5 years. They have become an expensive vanity item rather than the vacuum they are supposed to be.

to add to the previos comment, once you have taken out the middle part from inside the clear plastic dust collector. you can then prise these parts apart with some gentle force, i used a flat screw driver. then i washed all the holes, etc with clean water and let them dry.

I had a similar problem after clearing up a lot of dust following some building work. Try this. Remove filter and below are two screws with 'star' heads. Remove these and the cone/cyclone (the pointy bit that goes inside the clear dust collector or whatever it's called) can be removed. It's quite tight but with the screws removed it can be pulled out. You will probably find that there is a lot of dust/muck built up around some fins at the top. Give it all a good clean and reassemble. It did the trick for me.
