Mend Ford Transit Engine

Engine Problems on a ford transit?

I have a ford transit with a normally aspirated 2.5l engine which was running fine until i went accelerated from slow revs in fifth gear and then it started running on 3 cylinders it has had problems with air getting into the injectors via the leak off pipes, i thought this had happened again so i bled the pipes but it didnt make any difference and it was making white smoke which was like vapourised diesel which it has never done before i i stopped it when i got to work and started it up after work and it was running in the same way. I managed to limp it home and then the next day i tried to start it but it wouldnt start at all. I turned it over and there was no unusual noises (no clunking or rattling) I was wondering if anyone had any ideas. I have been told the timing belt could have possibly slipped a tooth, would this cause these symptoms?

It's a sticking injector, you can test this by loosening off all injector pipes, get some one to turn the engine over and look at all injectors you will see compressed air coming from the cylinder coming out of the sticking injector.
His will put air into the fuel system making it very difficult to start.

have known the tips of those injectors to burn away causing the compression from the cylinder to enter back into the fuel system via the injector which will cause an air problem. worth taking them out to check them

there was a factory mod on ford 2.5 diesel engine as fitted to ldv convoy which was to remove blanking rubber from no 1 injector , remove leak off pipe from no 4 injector and tee piece, fit new leak off pipe from tee piece to no 1 injector and fit blank to no 4 injector.this may be the cause of your problem [its worth trying!]

Air does NOT get into system from return pipes.Problems with air locks/bleeding always affect the supply side,so discount that.Always good practice to check cam/injector timing so go ahead and check that, but I'd be checking the valve clearances, compressions, and the cylinder head gasket in that order.Incorrect pump timing usually produces bluish/grey smoke particlarly when cold/high speed/light load changing to black at full load. It's the non start that concerns me.possible the cyl's filled with coolant.
