Mend FORD ESCORT 1.6XL Ford Engine Cold

FORD ESCORT AUTOMATIC GEAR SELECTION PROBLEMS?

I have a 1998 1.6XL Automatic Ford Escort. when the engine is cold I cannot select any gear, if i run the car for about 5 minutes i can select a gear but it is very fierce. After about 20 minutes running ,everything appears to be OK. Anybody got any clues?
