engine is popping back thru carberator?

Why won't the engine start when I crank it over? All it does is pop thru the carb.

sounds like timing is off ..you didn`t mention what mower it was but on most it has a shear key that keeps the flywheel in sync with crank and if it has sheared it will do this ...especially if you hit something with the blade while mowing
