Rover 25 (2001) Loss of power in all gears???

I have a very similar problem with my X reg Rover 25, also 1.4i 16v. The engine lost power a few weeks ago and it revs at 1500-2000 at idle instead of the normal 850. It is really annoying and the garages I went to don't really have a clue. One garage suggested to change the exhast as 'it might be clogged and the exhaust fumes cannot fully discharge' ???!!! Any ideas before I fork out hundreds on (perhaps) unnecesary new exhaust ???

I am having the same problem with the same car of the same year! I have got as far as you also. do u have irratic idle as well? I changed the fuel filter which improved things but not solved it

start with fuel filter(its cheapest)moving on to fuel pressure check.this will show whether its the pump or fuel pressure regulator.pump would be my guess
