Omni Step has stopped working on ignition - Swift Sundance 630L on Fiat?

The Omni Step has stopped retracting on ignition for my 2005 Swift Sundance 630 L on Fiat. It works fine from the door switch so it is not a problem with the step itself. Omni Step say that Swift install their own relay. Nothing in Swift Manual about any relay, where it is?. Could it be a fuse somewhere?

The step on my Lunar Telstar regularly fails to retract when the engine is started. This is purely due to road dirt (mud or salt) getting into the position detector switch. It can be cleaned and will work again for a time but is sufficiently unreliable (I have a bent step!!) that it is better to forget that the step should retract automatically. The alarm on a manual step is just as unreliable.

Thanks for your advice, after discovering that my step buzzer was not working by bending my steps on a gate post, which cost me £300 to repair, it is worth looking carefully for the illusive fuse to ensue that the automatic retracting device is working. It was exactly as described on my sundance 630L, under a plastic cowl. Dont go looking amongst the fuses under the bolted fuse cover, it is to the left and above that box, you can only really see it if you squat right down and look from below. It was a 15 amp fuse blue in colour.

Anyway thanks for your help

My experience is that the problem is the switch mounted on the step motor box. This should be closed circuit when the step is out and opens when the step retracts and hits it. It will probably have a torn rubber 'boot' and water ingress has made it always open circuit - so the relay logic system thinks it is retracted when it isn't. Replace the switch (part number 51-6489-01).

Hi,

I have the same problem and am in the process of trying to resolve it!

I found my relay and warning buzzer underneath the cupboard bottom of the TV unit, I have a 630G. However a better way for you to trace yours would be to look underneath your van at the black cable trunking running away from the step, observe where it enters the van and hopefully it will be easy to find the relay.

Good luck.

Fuse is under plastic cover to the left of the coolant tank under bonnet.
Relay and warning buzzer behind / above the fridge.
If the buzzer sounds then the ignition supply is present.

The omnistep on our suntor stopped working, the fuse was a bitch to locate, we eventually found it just above the rocker cover in the engine bay, i would imagine that yours is probably in the same place as it is the same motorhome, just a different name Sundance, failing this get the wife to crouch down by the door where the step used to be each you enter and exit the van

Hope this helps

They are right, it is highly likely to be the relay that takes the ignition signal to the step motor. unfortunately the relay could be anywhere, your best bet is to trace the wires back from the step into the van and hopefully they have sited the relay in a bed box or cupboard. change this and it should solve the problem
