Cassette will not play, FF or REW, Panasonic RX-DS45?

The above portable stero plays radio and CD, but I have not used the tape in a long time. However I need to use it today, the tape will load, but when I press play the mechanism engages but does not lock in place. The same happens for rewind and fast forward. I am able to eject the tape. I have tried cleaning the head etc, but to no avail.

Any ideas welcomed.

Better late than never?
Have you tried taking the audio cassette out and rapping it firmly on a hard surface (both side's). Sounds to me like you have a jammed/stiff tape, which can somtimes fool a player's auto switch off mech

either the motor is duff (you should be able to hear it running when on ff) or the belt needs replacing
