how do I adjust brightness & contrast?

you have to set what is known as the grey scale tracking
once the tv has been on for five minutes turn down the brightness and the contrast control. on the fly back transformer
the part with the red cable that goes into the picture tube
you will see a small control that as the word screen just above it turn it down slowly til' the screen goes black (put a mirror in front of the tv to make it easer to see) if that fails you may have a fault in the beam limiter circuit
