Mend Ford 55 Diesel Fuel Pump

my escort 1800 diesel smoking model 55 year 51 plate?

after fitting a second hand fuel pump on to my van plus fitting new belts and (having it recoded by ford) it smokes and i have to put my foot to the metal to get anything out of the old girl. please help i dont really wont to get rid of her.
