Just fixed my brake light switch...
remove soft panel as described above, also take out fuse cover/coin cubby hole as this will give you extra light. Disconnect terminals by pulling firmly.
Remove switch - on my 2001 Piccaso HDI, it was on fine thread, which meant it took quite a few turns to remove - but as it is not a tight fitting this was easy.
As I could not buy a new switch on a Sunday, I had a go at fixing existing one. There's nothing complex about these switches, so I guessed that there was a problem with the internal connection - this worked for me.
Depress the button at end of switch -keep it pressed, hold upright and squirt WD40 into it. Release and push the button quickly a few times. Get some kitchen paper and wrap it round switch, then turn it button downwards, push it in and out again and tap it on its side to drain out WD40 - when I did this a black residue came out. Dry off the switch.
To test, pull the switch connector lead through open fuse cover and reconnect - turn the ignition on. Switch is now in open position, so brake lights will be permanently on if switch is now ok.
Mine worked again at this point. I got someone to check the lights whle I depressed and released the switch to make sure it was ok before I reconnected.
When putting switch back in hole above brake pedal, don't screw in, just push firmly.
This is a simple job, and despite my cumbersome explanation, takes about 15 mins to do in total. Saves a few quid if you're lucky as well.
