Ashphalt shingle roof leaks?

I have an add-on that was built by a real amateur, supposedly 2 years ago, but looks older. It has fiberglass insulation that looks like it was installed fairly well, and even has a vapour barrier below the insulation.

However this winter, it leaked so much that it ruined some cabinets and shelves. (It's a shed/garage/storage room).

I don't know anything about fixing it, and would like some tips. I've only been able to find a book that said just general steps:
flashing (what's that?), paper (tar paper?), and the asphalt shingles, and maybe one other step, I forget.

I think I remember something about some wooden shingles being on some part of the roof too.

Any tips or web sites, or books?. There are no REAL trusses, as I've said it's very amateur. The trusses are spaced ok, it seems, but there's only some almost random pieces of wood going between them, spaced several inches apart. I'm wondering why the whole thing didn't cave in this winter with all the snow in Ontario. The pieces of wood between the trusses are very thin and narrow, it seems.

Almost all the insulation is soaked, and ruined, and the "vapour barrier" is half ripped and hanging too.

I guess you could call Mike Holmes, but in the meantime lets get back to basics. Your shingle roof is leaking from the outside, because the flashing (thats the lead strip that is fixed to the original wall to cover the join between old and new) may have a gap to let water in. Ideally there should be a groove cut into the original wall, and the lead flashing pushed in. The lead is then bent downwards so that it completely covers the join from the new roof to the old wall, and water is cast off. Tar paper is the stuff thats fixed on top of the new rafters, before the asphalt shingles are fixed on - sort of an additional water barrier. Wooden shingles are normally only used in the vertical position, usually made from cedar or similar material. So, if I were you, I'd remove the fibreglass insulation from the ceiling of the new roof, and look for traces where the water is coming in. On the outside of the roof, there will be a fault on the flashing somewhere - if you can see a gap, then water certainly can. Good luck with your investigation! We British have much to thank you Canadians for past deeds but our governments seem to forget it. Cheers!
