slipped slate?

How do I fix a slipped slate on my roof

Why is it that we Brits do things the hard way?
In France they fix slates by use of wire clips that hook over the battens and have an upstand at the end to hold the slate. If a slate is broken you just push it up and lift to remove it. Push the new slate into the roof and let it drop to be held by the upstand. If the clip has failed it is easy to fit a new one, and replace the slate. These French roofing clips are available in various sizes and in stainless steel as well as galvanized, and will fit British slate sizes.

Rich is correct. The slates are fixed to the laths or battens by 2 nails one on each long edge of the slate, half way up. The nails are always covered by the next row of slates (that's the idea!) so it won't be possible to re-fix the slipped slate by the original method.

Usual method is to cut a "clip" from a strip of sheet metal - either copper, aluminium or lead about 1" (25 mm ) wide and the length would be the same as the slate overlap plus 3 or 4 ". You nail or screw the top end onto the batten or lath, slide the missing slate back into place over the clip and then bed the lower end of the clip over the bottom edge of the slate.

Make a hook in a piece of wire slide it up and over the tile that the loose one lyes on,replace old tile and bend wire upwards to stop it slipping off,you wont notice in a day or so,that's how it's done,or take all your tiles off and start anew.
