How to fix water leak from Mains Medway Super water heater G.C. no. 5247639?

I have the exact same problem with the same model. My leak is coming from the base of the rod that connects the dial on the front (for heating temperature) with the rest of the unit. It's rusted in that area. I don't know what this part is called. Is Steve still out there? - can you help us?
