You would be very lucky if you got away without any
damage to your engine, usually valve and camshaft damage would result.

Yes it does - if the chain coils back round on itself it can smash through the aluminium block castings - also the camshafts stop rotating and the pistons can collide with the valves....not a pretty sight.
