Mend Renault Kangoo Heater Resistor Speeds

renault kangoo 1.5 dci heater blower resistor?

we have lost speeds 1/2 on blower the resistor pack is not feeding any power through the coils there appears to be a resistor in the circuit which has blown can you obtain replacements for this and if you can where from and what is the part number

why does the blower work on some of the speeds and why if thermal fuse has gone does the fan work at all can it be the resistor not the fuse?

First do not have your key in the ignition on position or when feeling for the resistor pack you can get a small shock!.pull the pack from its housing socket and cut the red and black wires half way(draw them gently first).the small thermal resistor can be cut away from between the coils(be carefull not to crush any of the coils together). The maplins thermal fuse is good for the replacement but they dont usually keep these in the shop stock but ordered they arrive within two days.Soldering-this is the important bit-the housing is coated in zinc for weather protection. You cannot solder to zinc so save yourself time and mess.
Scrap/file carefully the coating down to the brass below. This will now be good for the joint and will automaticaly reseal with the solder.Reconnect the red and black with a twin connector block and bind with electrical tape to seal.refit into fan housing and hey presto fan now works great.

Just followed mrlazyuk's instructions and had the job done in 10 mins - not bad for a complete novice. Many thanks to all, especially Mr Lazy. p.s. would recomend a good torch, you can see the unit - but only prior to putting your hands in !!

The thermal fuses I see in maplins are 128 degrees but what is the current rating for the thermal fuse for the heater blower?....is it 10 Amps?

Thanks

Doh just reread some of the threads and seen 69 pence for the fuse and it would be 2.99 delivery from maplins.
i just looked on ebay. typed in thermal fuse and got one being delivered for £1.44
Do they solder into place ok usually? as im thinking if they are a thermal fuse, wont the soldering action blow the fuse?????
any other way of joining it to the old connectors?

looking at my options. i can get a 127 degrees fuse and solder it into the old resistor pack when i take it out or buy a unit off ebay £25 and just replace the whole unit....am i right in thinking this????
how much is the fuse from maplins? besides it being 127 degrees fuse, does it have a different name?
thanks for your help guys

it will have a temperture fuse can get from maplin (127 degress)
the unit pack is under the drip tray in the centre of the engine bay remove the wipers and pull the plastic tray away.
its black and looks lke a big fan just undo the connections and pull the little resistor unit out away from the whole unit ( you will see this )cut out the fuse and solder the new fuse in. you could test the fuse first on ohms.

Just replaced one on my kangoo van. Easy job once you know where to look. Under the bonnet on the drivers side, take out the leaf mesh guard and the plastic tray underneath. The heater blower is at arms length in the middle of the cavity. The part that needs replacing has a black and a red wire coming out of it. There are 3 plastic clips holding it into the body of the fan.Undo the clips and pull it out. Now reach behind the fan assembly and pull out the multiplug connector. The resistor unit should come out. Disconnect the multiplug from the resistor unit and remove. Fitting the new one is the reverse procedure. Remember that this will have to be done without being able to see what you are doing, a bit like the krypton factor!!The part from renault cost £31:95 inc vat I found a comment on the internet that said someone had paid renault £300 to do this job!!! Its a bit fiddly but worth it. Good Luck.

The resistor is usually inside the circular drum that houses the blower. Find the blower (commonly behind the passenger glove box) and look for a 4-wire cable that will connect to the resistor. Follow the cable and you should be able to see two bolts with fairly small heads. These hold the resistor into the drum. You will probably need to undo the cable connector and then you should be able to undo the bolts to withdraw the resistor. Mine is a green board with an embedded resistor circuit and a thermal fuse. Cheers, Chris

I had a similar problem on my 02 Laguna 1.9 DCI. Only the maximum blower speed worked. The resistor was under the glove box, secured to the blower unit by two 5.5mm headed bolts. The fault was a thermal fuse that bridges the two halves of the resistor - the solder connection had broken. I cleaned up the contacts and re-soldered them. Took about an hour to remove, repair and replace the resistor. Cost was zero. Has worked fine since (2 months). The previous owner paid over £300 to have it replaced, so it seems a comon fault.
