how do i change the thermostat on a vw golf mk3 1.6. 1994, where is it situated?

I'm getting a check engine light in my my 1994 golf 3 that goes out at 2400 rpm.. and for some reson i can't find where to plug my diagnostics into.. so whats wrong and where do i plug in. email mt at squirrel4207@hotmail.com
