Garage Roof Replacement?

Hello chaps.

My garage was put up in about 1979 and used that great stuff corrugated asbestos concrete for the roof. Joy. We moved in about 2 years ago, and I'm noticing that when it rains, it tends to soak through, making things in the garage damp and musty. I think I need a new roof (or can it be repaired?) and be before I go out and hire in a costly contractor to do the job, I want to see if its feasible to do the job myself.

Firstly is taking the roofing panels off, and as long as I follow the proper procedures, like wearing a mask, keeping the panels whole, no power tools and double bagging the stuff for safe disposal in some council tip somewhere (I'll have to find that out), I think I should be okay with that.

What I'll be left with are those metal girders which I need to get stuff for and that's where I'm stuck. What do I use? Ideally I'd just prefer a corrugated plastic sheet to replace the roof with (this looks easy! ;-)) but will that do? Cost is a major consideration here.

Oh, and it's a double garage., and the slope on it is very slight (probably less than 5-10 degrees)

Any advice would be so much appreciated !

Paul H.

Thanks for that John. Actually it gave me an idea; what could be the problem is that the water is getting in around the bolt-holes and running along underneath. It might just look like its getting porous. I'd rather try and repair it before replacing, so what I'll try nexr is painting some of that waterproof "gloop" over each bolt and see if that does it. (Don't know what it's called!)

The current roof panels have those 'J' shaped hooks, but I didn't know what they were called. I now know what to look for in B&Q!

Thanks again, John.

Hi Paul - I had exactly the same problem a few years ago. Asbestos sheet doesn't usually become porous, but it does crack, and this is where the water comes in - especially around the bolt holes. I found a supplier of second hand corrugated steel roofing panels near me (Northumberland) and the panels came from a decommisioned factory...they were plastic coated and did the job well. However I had to replace the steel sections with timber joists to make for an easy fixing. You can of course use plastic panels - the type used for conservatatories are probably best, but you'll need some 'skyhooks' to secure them. These things are like a letter 'J' in style - threaded at the straight end, they hook under the steelwork and can be pulled down tight.
