I just replaced my cord too, and it wouldn't rewind fully either. I knew that I needed to get an extra wind around, but couldn't push it around. There is a small slot in the top of the pulley. Push the end of the cord up through the slot and wind the cord round for a turn. Then tie the handle back on. It should now recoil fully.

I just repaired the pull-cord on my old Victa Sunbeam. The cord broke off on Xmas eve. I took the petrol tank and the pull-cord housing cover off, being careful to remember which screws went where. Leaving the handle of the pull-cord on, I re-threaded the cord through the holes and tied a single knot in the end. Before re-assembling the cover and petrol tank, I used Jason's advice about winding the rope around five times clockwise. The I carefully removed the pull-cord handle at this stage to thread the cord back through the pull cord housing cover. After putting it all back together it worked a treat and now I'm back in the good books with the missus. Thanks a lot, Jason!

I think you may need to wind the rope clock wise, if you have the rope pulled all the way out and wind it clock wise(about 5 turns) you should feel the spring working, then put the other end back in the eylet and tie your starter handle on. If the spring is not still working you may have a broken spring,or the spring has come out of its locked position, best of luck jason
