Hello Carol,
Make sure you have threaded the machine properly, top tension about 4 or 5, bottom tension should be tight enough just to be able to pull the thread through, if it is too tight slacken the screw on the bobbin case about a quarter of a turn at a time anti clockwise until you get it right.
