Windows media player does not have an in-built dvd player. What you need to source is dvd player software, like power dvd. WMP will then use the software to play dvd files in the player, or use the software you've purchased in its own stand-alone player.

Download what is called a codec pack. It will save you from ever having to go through this again. In setup you can select what codec you want on the computer
