reprogram mp3?

Over time i have collected a few mp3 players that currently do not work i have tested them as best as i could but there is no way there will work as they are.

They all power up, but just wait at an egg timer not doing anything else from there. Is there any way that you can access the management systems located on these mp3's and reset or reprogram them so that they will resume normal function.

I presume the problem with these are more program crashes rather than actual hardware faults.

any help would be much appreciated.
