how to convert video files to mp4 / mpeg-4 or 3gp files?

i have loads of standard video files and would like them on my phone and the phone only plays mp4 and 3gp files so which program can i use to convert these?

There are some freeware converters out there, you just have to trawl through the other stuff to get to them :)
