get yourself an optical mouse they r cheap now and save the hassle of cleaning every few days.

Removing the ball and wiping it down with a cloth and window cleaner is a good first step, but the real problem lies with the rollers inside the mouse. I reach in there and scrape the gumbo off with my finger nail, all the way around those long little rollers. Poof, you'll have a new feeling mousy again. Good Luck!
