I cut through the cable how do I fix it?

I'm assuming you are in the UK and am quoting UK details.
The easiest way is just to move the plug up the cable, if you don't lose too much flex. If it is a moulded in plug you can't swap over, fit another of the same type, but make sure you use a fuse of the same rating, or swap the old one over. Fuses in new plugs are usually 13 amp but your hedge trimmer will probably have a lower rated fuse in the plug.

A 'choc block' is more a bodge than a good repair as it has no outer case and could easily leave wire exposed to damp or to you, even if it is taped over. You can get proper cable joiners from most DIY stores, which are like an in-line switch without the switch. Use one rated at 13 amps for a power cord, rather than one rated at 3 or 5 amps which is for lighting.

You could also use an in-line 3 pin plug and socket, like those fitted to some garden tools as standard. Make sure the socket is fitted to the cut end with a plug on it and the plug to the cut end with the trimmer on it. NEVER have two plugs on opposite ends of the same piece of cable!

Either move the plug to where you cut it off (if that leaves you enough cable length?)

Or, buy a choc-box from a DIY store or screwfix
