Mend Fuse Unit Change

old wired fuse consumer unit change?

EDF have quoted £810 for new style 12 way consumer unit and supplementry earth bonding. 1/2- 3/4 days work is that a fair or stitch up price?

I have just had a quote to replace the consumer unit.......£1475 plus VAT!!. According to the guy it was £450 to fit CU, and then £88 for each circuit breaker, the rest is for issuing the certificate. So you guys who can do it for £380 you must be really cheap. Obviously he is not doing the job, I am capable of replacing it but I cannot issue a part P certifcate and wanted it done properly, what concerns me is that this guy will be ripping off the local OAPs, and will also added to people who are tempted to replace themselves. I will be getting someone else round.

I think that the price quoted is way over the top ...... I am fully Part P approved and can change a consumer unit for £380 pounds anywhere in the UK ....this price would include parts and labour and a full electrical installation certificate.

Depends on the location of the consumer unit, main water stop-cock & gas meter (main equipotential bonding). If it's like for like & the main equipotential bonding locations are nearby than that price is too high! Get more quotes!!!

And yes you do need to be Part P. Each job has to registered with local authority. The other option is you pay the local authority to come out and check the work, but most aren't capable!

That does seem a bit steep. I am a sparky in the south and to do that job it would be a days work including changing the consumer unit, an electrical installation certificate and because you can't clarify that the installtion is ok a periodic inspection report is required. (This i have only just found out from my registered body).
Cost - £250 Labour + £120 for Parts + 300 for testing. Its not just as easy as popping one out and putting one in anymore. On top of that you would have the bonding and that would be dependant on location. Hope this helps

Thanks John and hi-spec.

An addition to my question.
I mentioned to the joke checker I had done my own in my London house and rewired the lights as well several year ago. He then went on the defensive and said 'You could face a £5,000 fine now you have to be Part P registered.
Is there any truth in that?
