What makes a musty odor in washing machine?

We have a Whirlpool Ultimate Care II washing machine which has developed a strong, musty smell. What could be causing it? It is from the inside of the machine. sometimes when you lift the lid, the smell is very powerful. I have tried running clorox through it, but it hasn't helped much. Thanks.

try taking the soap drawer out and cleaning then try the rubber around the door make suer there is nothing stuck between the two pieces of rubber in the door as old soap powder can smell if stuck in there and finaly make sure your pipe for draining the water out is not higher than than your wahing machine. best of luck sorry i can't help any more than this
