we have just put new batteries in our pentax optio 50 (2yrs old) and it wont do anything.it doesnt appear to be getting any power.we tried different batteries and the contacts look ok.nothing at all is happening.
It could be moisture damage - if the camera has been anywhere near water recently if so then put it into the airing cupboard this may help.
Or the bateries you are using might be long-life type AA which disappate a charge in a difernent manner to normal AA batteries and do not function to well with digital cameras.
