How do I remove the agitator on my Hotpoint washing machine?

On my machine which is similar to yours .. model VBXR1060T5AB.. there is no bolt below the fabric softener cap and the agitator simply slides down and pops into place.. one article suggested running a rope under the agitator and up and over a piece of 2-by-4 and using the leverage of the wood to pull the agitator up.. I was able to pull it up and off with my hands without the rope trick but some may be harder..
