12v starter briggs and stratton 17.hp?

edit previous. I assume the gear (shouldn't) be in constant contact with the fly wheel gear.

My gear is still in mint condition...the starter solenoid is not extening the gear to the flywheel gear. Or at least that is my interpretation of what is happening...I assume the gear should be in constant contact and there is a solenoid in the starter to extend the gear to flywheel during starting process. If it help the engine is a 17.5 hp ohc briggs and stratton model 31c707 type 0154 e1

You can get a new gear at your local lawnmower shop and I`m sure they`ll show how to get it off or just let them do it

Im having the same problem w/12hp the gear from the starter is plastic and chewed up so it wont engage the motor fully. I just cant figure out how to get the clip off without breaking it. Any suggestions

make sure battery has full charge and make sure gear is free to move ......
