I researched this a while ago, and I'm certain there was an inexpensive product available, some kind of non-toxic compound, to repair ceramic chips and still be able to serve food/drink. I can't find it now! Any ideas, other than replacing the chipped ware?

I am looking for the same. Google yielded this link:
http://www.videojug.com/film/how-to-repair-chipped-china
which is a video of a guy using epoxy and pastel chalk. Not perfect, but better than you might think.
