How to remove the column from the mechanism?

To separate the column from an office swivel chair gas mechanism, turn the chair over and remove the CLIP and WASHER from the center of the leg base. Then slowly withdraw the mechanism containing the gas lift cylinder from the column. Spread newspaper to protect the floor from falling greasy parts.
