17 year old kenmore heavy duty 70 series washer?

my washer is full of water from wash cycle and will not spin water out nor go to spin cycle....is there something easy I can do to fix it myself, or should I have a repair man come out? I'ts been a great washer and I feel it's worth repairing.

thanks

Sounds like the lid switch is broken. Unplug washer, remove screws on bottom right and left side of console. Flip console up and back. There will be a white plastic wire plug coming up from washer cabinet that is connected to another white plastic wire plug. Disconnect that plug. There a 3 wires coming from plug. Ignore diconnected plug mounted on cabinet and take a jumper wire and jump across the 2 outside wires on plug coming from console. This by-passes the lid switch. Make sure jumper is secure before re-starting machine.
