How do I fix the ticking sound in my Sony D-EJ306?

How do I fix the ticking sound in my Sony D-EJ360? It stopped working when I was listening to a CD last night and now it comes up with the error message of "no disc" when I put in a disc. I replaced the batteries and everything else is in check.
If you have any information to help me, I'd greatly appreciate your time. Thanks

I'm having a similar problem with another Sony CD player...I suspect it's either not spinning at the right speed, or the laser has stopped working right. Do you have any way to check to see if the laser is functioning? I can't see if mine is or not...
