I am afraid that the answer you have been given is not correct. I suspect the the person answering was talking about a DVB-T box which is connected to an aerial to watch Freeview. They can't be used with DVB-S systems that use a dish.
Next if you have ANY subscription channels or a Viewing Card to decrypt the Free To View channels like Ch4 & Ch5 you have to use a SKY Digibox but it can be any make. The reason is that only Sky boxes contain the decryption hardware. If you have anjy Premium channels like Movies or Sport you will have to call Sky to get your card 'paired' with your new box.
Alternatively if you call Sky they will send an engineer to replace your box with a refurbished on for £65.
