If all that fails you need to vist a web site called geeks to go, all one word with .com at the end. they will assist you with any problems you may have, they also ask you to do several things, so pay attention to them and if you have a printer, print out what they ask you to do, its simple, they will get rid of at least 98% of all your problems, and advise you on what you may need to up grade, this is a fantastic sevice

First question to ask is do you have enough RAM, what version of xp home or pro, If your running xp home it needs a minimum of 256mb but runs best with 512mb or more. Pro needs 512mb min but runs best with 1024mb or more.

Secondly your PC could be suffering form overheating, check the inside ( With the power OFF ) for excessive dust.

XP with SP2 needs at least 512MB RAM. If your PC has 256MB that's your problem. Plus all the startups as well.

go to start>run enter msconfig click ok.
from the system config window, choose the start up tab, in the menu that opens, deselect everything that you dont need to run at start up.... for example, ms office, acrobat, paintshop, etc etc.... choose apply, reboot pc if a box comes up at restart telling yo that changes were made, tick the dont remind box
