Mend Kenwood Chef Speed Stopped

Kenwood Chef A901P - speed increased - stopped - smelt BAD?

Our A901P suddenly went to max speed, stopped and started to smell. On looking at the top of the motor the 47nf capacitor had blown taking the adjacent resistor with it (it was literally in two parts). The only thing I do not know is the value of the resistor, can somebody help .....PLEASE
I plan to replace the brushes, caps, resistor and triac, do you agree that this should cure the primary problem and resulting failures.

There are repair kits containing caps, resistors and a triac available on Ebay for a resonable price

Thank you Ben and H Brunt, I replaced the triac, resistors and capacitor as well as the motor brushes and it is running as well as it ever did.
Interesting enough, my mother gave me her 700 series mixer that had smelt of burning before she switched it off. The problem was another blown capacitor.
My suggestion is that if you have an old Chef replace the capacitors before they blow.
Thanks once again.

Anne,

I do not know if this is any help but I suspect that the triac and the capacitors are the problem. I have recently had problems with 2 different Kenwood chefs.

The first was an A901. It made a 'popping' noise and then gave out white smoke. On examination this turned out to be a blown capacitor. It will be pretty obvious. There should be a crack in it or possibly a burn mark. In my case it was the 0.15 microfarad capacitor.

I also had a problem with a KM200 which would only operate at max speed. This was rectified by replacing the triac (colour black, approx. 1 cm square, 3 legs, secured to a metal place with a nut and bolt).

The triac can be bought from maplin and has part no. BTA08-600B. You should also be able to get a 0.15 microfarad capacitor also.

Good Luck

In my machine, the larger resistor to the left of the triac and near the 47 nF capacitor is 56 ohms and the smaller resistor to the right is 220 ohms.
