also shut down any screen savers you have running as it will say you have programs writing to your windows & it will take ages to scan the pc before you can defrag it

Boot into safe mode and do a scan disc and defrag, it may not fix the basic problem but you will now complete the defrag. Just restart to get back to full functionality when done.

If Malcolms tip doesnt work then best bet is to reload. I had this problem, but with XP it is very easy to reload and start afresh.

make sure there is are no programs running in the back ground.i.e look down the right bottom corner right click all programs that load up at start close them down. i.e virus checkers ect . you will find defrag works fine then.
